Ján Gavura: A Dignified Continuation

Ján Gavura was born in 1975 in Poprad. He holds a degree in Catholic theology from the Institute of Theology in Spišska Kapitula, and in the Slovak and English languages from the University of Prešov; he has worked as a senior lecturer in Prešov since 2001. A poet, translator and editor, he has published three poetry collections (the most recent of which, Besa, came out in 2012) and two works of literary science (Ján Buzássy, 2008; Lyrické iluminácie [Lyrical Illuminations], 2010). ‘[…] in Ján Gavura we can […] see a dignified continuation of this expression,’ writes Zoltán Rédey. ‘An expression that is highly cultivated, intimate and artistic, and stems from the inspiration of classical cultural heritage. At the same time, though, it is a living lyricism within contemporary Slovak poetry.’
