Fedor Gál was born in Terezín in 1945. He studied at the Faculty of Chemical Technology at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava and in 1977, completed his scientific training in sociology at the Institute for Sociology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. In 1992, he earned his PhD in economic science at the University of Economics in Prague. A dissident during the Czechoslovak normalization era, he became politically active after November 1989; he co-owned the Nova broadcasting station and founded the GplusG publishing house. Gál has written and co-authored over twenty books, including, for instance, Společnost ve světle sociologie [Society in the Light of Sociology] (1986) or Přes ploty: neodstraněná pošta [Over the Fences: Untrashed Mail] (2017).
